Redesign at its best

For this family from Ville Mont-Royal, the need for space, despite the size of the house, was overwhelming. With a partitioned ground floor and a 2nd floor that no longer reflected the growing needs of the occupants, the owners sought to create a friendly environment and more private spaces for each child and their parents.  By reviewing the divisions of each space and their uses, we were able, without compromise and without expansion, to create living spaces better adapted to each of the occupants and their lifestyle.

A chef-worthy cuisine

Semi-professional appliances, maximized work surfaces and well-designed storage, the kitchen design set the tone for the rest of the ground floor. By removing the powder room from the kitchen area and adding two windows on the side, the brightness of this room, which was very important for the owners, transformed the ambiance and made the kitchen more than welcoming. The oversized island, the two sinks, and the built-in appliances combine functionality and design, allowing several workstations for preparing meals and for entertaining family and friends in a welcoming atmosphere.

Change of use at the service of design

In order to meet the list of the customer’s needs, the change of use of several rooms was required. On the ground floor, two major changes took place:

  1. A garage that was too small for a normal size car was converted into a mudroom, allowing individual storage for each occupant.
  2. The entrance closet was transformed into a powder room, complete with a suspended toilet and a small sink in order to gain space in the kitchen and keep the practicality of a having a powder room on the same level. 

The second floor, on the other hand, was completely transformed to allow for the creation of living spaces better suited to the needs of the family:

  1. A complete bathroom including bath, Italian shower, and washer/dryer was created in the boy's former bedroom allowing better centralized access on the second floor for the children and their parents. 
  2. The large room above the garage was divided to create the new children's room, including a walk-in closet, as well as a bright office space long dreamed of by the parents. 
  3. The unused space of the upstairs hallway and the former main bathroom were redesigned to allow the creation of a complete master suite including a bathroom with double vanity, large Italian shower and infloor heating as well as a walk-in closet.

The staircase, the central axis of the house

With a new open-concept on the ground floor and the refined transitional style adopted, the renovation of the staircase was essential. Previously narrow and dark, an open design, without risers and with recessed stringers was recommended. The simplicity of the railings combined with the addition of a glass wall overlooking the office, illuminates the new staircase, highlighting it as a centrepiece in the common living area. 

Planning for renovation

The planning of the project, spread over almost a year, made it possible to clearly identify the needs and establish a game plan for the renovation of this house in the town of Mont-Royal. Nevertheless, structural surprises and window changes required flexible work and close collaboration with the owners to achieve the final result. The privileged relationship created during the year between the designer and the clients helped to keep the initial vision on track, while improving it according to the unexpected occurrences on the site. This is a very good example of the power of teamwork in a complete turnkey renovation project.
