Project Description

A dream master suite renovation

Originally, the scope of the project was to update the 3rd floor of a semi-detached house and was to include a bathroom, office and guest bedroom. Through discussions and brainstorming  between the client and the designer,  the project took a completely different turn.  Being the brightest and quietest space in the house, the owners chose instead, to build their master suite and bath, transforming this space into their own private quarters and keep the 2nd floor for the children’s room and the guest room.

The bedroom:

The concept was to provide the owners with their very own master floor, providing privacy and luxury much like a boutique hotel. This streamlined and generous master retreat was designed with high end finishes, including built in furniture and integrated lighting which provide an airy feeling. The bedroom is outfitted with a custom built-in closet cabinetry and wall mounted TV. The interior storage of the bedroom furniture was fully customized and made to measure for the needs of the owners. The darker color of the furniture was chosen to add warmth in this generous space. The cherry wood flooring is laid out in angled pattern. The 2 lacquered MDF bedside tables balance out the imposing Italian leather-clad king bed. The entire lighting system, heating and blinds are controlled from a home automation system, accessible with a smart phone. Nothing was left to chance in this project.

The bathroom :

The entrance of the master suite overlooks the bathroom. The view upon entering is worthy of a boutique hotel. The toilet is a separated by a pocket door from the rest of the bathroom for maximum privacy. There is 12 foot long shower, with a central linear drain, a double, ceiling mounted rain shower head, a freestanding bathtub with floor mounted faucet, double vanity and custom pharmacy cabinet made from hickory with integrated lighting & mirror and wall faucets. This entire space is outfitted with a heated floor system that warms the feet, even in the shower. Add to this a ceramic-clad bench in the shower, a niche to conceal the various soap bottles and other products as well as a custom-made fixed shower glass panel. The bathroom’s only window was also updated with frosted glass panels for added privacy. The contrast of marbled ceramics and mosaics on the floor makes it timeless and will allow the owners to enjoy this bathroom for years to come. Hickory was also used for a built-in bench and the doors of a tall storage cabinet located at the entrance to this luxurious space. This storage area was an essential element since the owners often have different schedules. Thus, one can lay out or hang their clothes for the next morning without having to return to the room and disturb the other person. A new and completely independent heating and air conditioning system was also planned and installed,  because the original location and size of the HVAC system would not be sufficient or effective for this vast space. It was also necessary to install acoustic insulation in the floor to prevent sound from travelling between the 3rd and 2nd floors. In all, this project was thoughtfully planned in every detail in order to give customers their dream master suite. The extraordinary result of this project is proof of what can come from dialogue and great collaboration between client-designer!
